MINUTES OF THE WEST NORWALK ASSOCIATION
February 8, 2014
Board members present: Gay Mac Leod, Galen Wells, Anthony Carrano, Ken D’Arinzo, Candide Valadares and Brian Forschino. Rebecca Oresman, Ron Paladino, and Linda Forcellina were absent.
The meeting was held at the home of Co-President Gay Mac Leod because of postponements due to snow and school cancellations. Gay called the meeting to order at 1:05 pm.
Mayor’s Night Out – Gay Mac Leod
The Mayor’s Night Out has been rescheduled from February 6th to February 20th from 7:30 – 9:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room at Fox Run School. The Board agreed to address the following issues during the question and answer portion of the evening:
Questions:
- Enforcement of the Norwalk Blight Ordinance;
- Minor traffic violations (e.g., talking on cell phones, failure to obey stop signs and/or traffic lights on side roads, etc.);
- Parking at the Norwalk Public Library;
- Lack of garbage pick-up in much of West Norwalk;
- A more specific definition of the “Keep Norwalk Beautiful” program;
- Lack of City Water and City Sewage in much of West Norwalk; and
- Lack of recycling in schools.
The Board will ask residents via our Facebook page what issues they would like discussed at the Event.
CNNA Meeting Update – Anthony Carrano
The Norwalk Common Council approved a $2.3M budget for renovation of Rowayton Avenue, including lowering the road under the Rowayton Station Railroad Bridge to provide increased clearance. The CNNA is strongly opposed to the Project.
Family Fun Day – Anthony Carrano
Anthony filed the necessary paperwork with the City of Norwalk for the Family Fun Day scheduled for July 12th at Fox Run School. The City asked the West Norwalk Association to have a member of the Board to attend the City Council Meeting on February 12th to answer any questions specific to the applications. Anthony plans to attend.
Anthony suggested purchasing advertising for the event in the Ponus Ridge Middle School & Brien McMahon High School play programs.
Anthony will set up a sub committee meeting for the Family Fun Day. Final budget for the Fun Day will be dependant upon what we ultimately decide to offer and whether we will be able to charge for food / entertainment.
All Other Business
The Board discussed taking a more active stand on issues affecting West Norwalk residents. The Board agreed to poll residents for a better understanding of their concerns which could be done via our Facebook page.
A plan to build a mall on select parcels of the Reed Putnam Urban Renewal Plan at the intersection of Route 95 and Route 7 is currently under review by the City. The site was initially approved for an office building and residences.
Dragone Classic Motorcars of Westport has approached the City of Norwalk about opening a New England Auto Museum on West Avenue.
The owner of “My Three Sons” is opening a new teen facility. Ponus Ridge Middle School sponsored a “Teen Night Out” at the current facility on February 7th from 7:00 – 9:30 pm. Approximately 215 students from the school attended.
